How to Read a Heat Sheet

Heat Sheets will be emailed out on Friday afternoon/evening before a meet.

What is a Heat Sheet? What Does It Say?

The Heat Sheet is a program that shows all the participating swimmers and what events they will participate in as well as the heat number and lane number.

Event Number:

There are several events in each meet. They are organized by stroke, age, and gender group.

Heat Number:

In each of the events there are HEATS. Each heat has up to 6 swimmers depending on the size of the pool. (One per lane.)

Lane Number:

This will tell you which lane your swimmer is scheduled to be in.

Seed Time:

Once a swimmer participates legally in an event, they will have a "seed time" in that event for the next meet. Swimmers are placed in heats and relays according to their seed times*. The seed time is the fastest time the swimmer obtained in the past for that particular event.

Combined Events:

We sometimes "combine" races to speed up the meet. For example, if we have 3 girls swimming Fly in the 11-15 age group and 3 boys of the same age group -- we will combine them into one heat to save time, but recognize the placement of each gender group.

How to Mark Your Swimmer

Marking your swimmers is required to help remind the swimmers of their events and also helps our volunteers ensure they have the correct swimmers in the correct place.

Include:

  • Swimmer's FIRST or LAST name
  • Specific meet information on his/her shoulder or arm:
    • Events -- Heats -- Lanes

Tips:

  1. Write on clean dry skin with no sunscreen.
  2. Apply sunscreen once the marker has dried.
